Barked Buddha (poem + photography)

Watch as winter bluster inspires
barked Buddha to dance in its sway,
conducting Gaia’s symphony
through intricate mudras
with its flailing limbs—
all on public display.

New Creative Venture: Cosmic Raven Photography 🖤📷✎✨

Since the moment I had my very first camera phone in my hands at the age of 16 or 17 (that’s over 10 years ago now), I’ve had an avid interest in taking pictures. (Poetry was always my #1 love, though.) Anyway, back in the flip phone days, I can’t say most of those pictures were all that pleasing to the eyes, but that didn’t stop me from filling up countless memory cards.  I also dabbled in quite a bit of photo editing, in an attempt to merge the dream world with reality. Here are some flip phone pictures I took and edited in the past, so you can get an idea:

Once I got my first smartphone, the photo quality improved, and I was filling my iPhone’s storage in no time. I also used my mom’s old digital camera every once and a while. In the back of my mind, I had this nagging need: a professional camera, but I told myself that 1. I can’t afford it, and, 2. I’m not an actual photographer so who am I kidding? I figured I should just stick to my poetry, and that’s what I did for a while. A long while. Drawing, painting, and photography were passions, but they always seemed to take the backburner to the written word.

Well, months ago, I decided to invest in what makes my heart sing (Thank you for the creative push and camera suggestion, Bob!), and bought myself a decent camera. Okay, it’s actually pretty nice. It’s no Nikon, but I still love it! So yeah, I fell in love with it after the first picture I captured through its non-phone lens.

On the day when sprlumix.jpging showed herself in the heart of winter (60°F+ in mid-January in Ohio is nuts! And it looks like another spring-like day is upon us today… You know what that means!), I grabbed my new camera and ventured out into the woods, taking as many nature photos as possible. It was a gray day, but everything seemed immensely colorful to me. The serene mix of fresh warm winter air in my lungs and the glow from my newfound love of snapping photos invigorated me. It also helped diminish my winter blues and cabin fever that comes with working from home.

P1000163.JPGAfter returning to my humble abode that same day, an idea smacked me across the face. Well, not literally, but I’m a poet, so some dramatization is in my nature. 😛  So, as I was saying… I thought to myself, “How awesome would it be to infuse outer space with Gaia?” Then Carl Sagan’s words came to mind: “We are starstuff.” (which is both poetic AND scientific). Then, another thought: “How cool would it be to also write captions for each picture in mystical poetry form?” In those moments, Cosmic Raven Photography was born! I figured my best platform for this sort of thing was Instagram, so a created an IG account (@CosmicRavenPhotos) for my stardust-infused nature photography a few days ago. The feed will be filling up fast because I’m making this a daily thing. I mean, I already have enough pictures to last me months on end… 😀 This will keep me motivated to write poetry daily and/or revive old poems, and above all, keep my soul happy. 🙂

The nitrogen in our DNA, the calcium in our teeth, the iron in our blood, the carbon in our apple pies were made in the interiors of collapsing stars. We are made of starstuff.

―Carl Sagan, Cosmos

It’s such a relief that I didn’t actually listen to my inner (or outer) naysayer every single time it said “But it costs too much,” “You’re no photographer,” “What if people don’t like it?” or “You might fail.” Please, if your inner dialogue or someone’s negative comments  are ever like that for anything that could potentially bring you unparalleled joy, let it go into one ear and right out the other, into a massive black hole!
